Pages and Places: New Orleans

Pages and Places

So this is the first in my feature Pages and Places.   I’ll be talking about bookstores, libraries, bookish places, meet-ups, places I like to write, or anything else that has books and inspires writing.

So in the spring I went to New Orleans.  And while I was doing a walking tour in the garden district with my friends, we happened across a little bookstore.  It was a cute little place and had a great collection of Louisiana and New Orleans related books.  There was also a good selection of signed books, but I didn’t see any must haves since they were mostly adult fiction.  I also loved how they stacked books, on the side, to have the most use of shelf space, because let’s face it, we’ve all been there.

I wound up getting a book called Madam: A Novel of New Orleans, which is based off the true story of Madam Josie Arlington in the Storyville era.  I don’t know if Storyville is common for those outside of NOLA to know about, but I didn’t hear about it till I was walking around and the name alone intrigued me.  So that’s my travel book and the sticker will stay as part of the souvenir.

There is also a coffee shop next door, and if we hadn’t had coffee right before the streetcar, we would have gotten some. But two of us wound up coming back later in the week and the pastries are worth it more than the coffee.  When I go to fun new places, I try to ask for what they recommend, and they didn’t have anything fun or local, so I think I just had a mocha.  But the pastries were all done by a local shop, and I wanted them all. So if you want a cute little place off the beaten path in NOLA, take a streetcar to Washington street and go a couple blocks south.
