Writers and their Writing: Patricia C. Wrede

writers and their writing

So Patricia Wrede is one of the Authors that hooked me on fantasy.  I remember finding Calling On Dragons at a Barnes and Nobel when I was a kid, I still remember where in the store (which still is in the same spot) the books were.  The main character, Cimoriana was what drew me in, a girl that didn’t want to be what others thought she should be, and I always marched to the beat of my own drum.  I devoured the book and then went back to buy the last three as quickly as possible.

As far as her writting, she crafts very intricate worlds with very unique characters, which is another reason I love her writing style. She has a very extensive set of questions for building worlds that you should check out if you’re trying to make a story in a place other than present day earth, and maybe even then you’d find it helpful.

I haven’t read any other books by Wrede.  I tried to read “Sorcery & Cecelia: or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot,” but I’ve never been a fan of diary format for stories. I have, after looking through what she’s written, added a couple of her others to my TBR list, especially “Wrede on Writing.”

Quotes

“Well,” said the frog, “what are you going to do about it?”

“Marrying Therandil? I don’t know. I’ve tried talking to my parents, but they won’t listen, and neither will Therandil.”

“I didn’t ask what you’d said about it,” the frog snapped. “I asked what you’re going to do. Nine times out of ten, talking is a way of avoiding doing things.”

Dealing with Dragons

“The efficiency of the cleaning solution in liquefying wizards suggested the operation of an antithetical principal,which-”

“Did you have to get him started?” Cimorene asked reproachfully.”

Calling on Dragons

“Well, of all the bacon-brained, sapskulled, squirish, buffle-headed nodcocks!”
