5 Movies with Foster Adoption Themes

So I love Instant Family. I one reason is I’m more like the couple in the movie where it’s not that we can’t have kids but foster to adopt is how we’re building our family. Just a nontraditional choice. But growing up, I watched several movies that had suttle or overwhelming themes of orphans, foster, and adoption. I can’t help if these started nudging me toward this decision. Here are 5 movies that still stand out to me.

1. Meet the Robinsons: This is one of my favorites. I think I watched this while I was still thinking about making this my life choice and it might have been part of what put me over the edge. It’s just a wonderful movie with so many surprises the first time you watch. Totally underrated. And I love movies that show how a couple of kind moments can change a life.

2. Angels in the Outfield: It’s been a while since I’ve watched this one, but putting it here makes me want to rewatch it. The foster system is the strong storyline through this movie of a Boy who just wants to be back with his dad. He’s in a foster only home with another boy and you see in small bits, a lot of what happens in a foster kids’ life.

3. Glenn Miller Story: I forgot until recently that adoption is in this movie. First, if you’ve never watched it, just for the life story of Glenn Miller it’s a good one. But Glenn and his wife couldn’t get pregnant, so they adopted. Not the focus of the movie, but part of the life of a very famous person

4. The Rescuers: I don’t really remember much of Down Under, but The first rescuer movie is about two mice helping an orphan named Penny who’s been kidnapped. And since she’s an orphan, everything just thinks she’s run away. From what I remember it was a little darker of a kid’s movie, and I always remember being sad that the girl felt like no one wanted her or cared for her.

5. Despicable Me: This one came out in my young adult years, but I’ll never forget first watching this movie and tearing up when girls were in the orphanage and the head lady person tells them no one wants them. I still say “I’ll take you” when I watch the movie. Love how a group of misfits find each other and start their nontraditional family.
